An exceptional gemstone, probably the largest fine color clean Tsavorite in the world was found near Arusha, Tanzania at the border of the original block B tanzanite mining area, (Block B extension), at a depth of 160 meters. The area is locally known as Karo. Even with a loupe, this stone is extremely clean. One or two other larger tsavorites have been unearthed in the last two or three years but they are lighter in color and the medium green color of this stone is better than any other stone in a similar size range.
Material like this has also been referred to as Meralani Mint Garnet but in such a large size, the tone becomes much darker and is no longer mint like at all. Weighing 120.68 cts., the cutting and proportions are good with no windowing and superior transparency. The stone was step cut in Thailand and measures 34.70 x 25.30 x 17.50mm.
At the Basel show from now until April 6, the stone can be viewed at Abouchar SA, Hall 3.0, Booth L 60 and is also being offered on-line at www.multicolour.com.
