Sir Evelyn de Rothschild

Sir Evelyn is currently Chairman of E.L. Rothschild Ltd, a private investment company focussed on India. He was Chairman and CEO of NM Rothschild and Sons Ltd, the international investment bank, from 1976 until 2003. During that time, he increased the total assets of the business from £400m in 1976 to £4.6b in 2003. He also expanded the number of offices worldwide from 15 to over 50.


From 1972 until 1989, Sir Evelyn also served as Chairman of The Economist Group, where the family is a large minority holder. During that time, its circulation increased from 101,000 to 362,000 copies; the turnover increased from £4.4m to £70.8m. Sir Evelyn is also a Director of IMG Worldwide Inc.

Previous corporate directorships include: Director of De Beers Consolidated Mines Ltd, and Director of IBM United Kingdom Holdings Ltd.

Sir Evelyn has served the British government in various capacities, including as Chairman of United Racecourse, and Deputy Chairman of Milton Keynes Development Corporation. He has also been a member of the UK Business Delegation with Prime Minister Blair to South America and has represented the UK at the International Institute of Strategic Studies meetings in Bahrain.

Sir Evelyn has maintained a lifetime commitment to philanthropy. He is Chairman of the ERANDA Foundation, a family foundation he founded in 1967 to support charities working in the fields of medical research, health and welfare, education and the arts. In this capacity, he funds the Integrated Rural Development Corporation in Tamil Nadu, which supports 26,000 people. He also built and operates the Lady Lynn Joyful Home for Children for 50 orphans in Tamil Nadu. Also in India, he serves as co-Patron with the Rajmata of Jaipur of the Elephant Family.

In addition, Sir Evelyn currently serves as a Governor of the London School of Economics and Political Science, a Member of the Council of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Chairman of Cambridge Business School Appeal, co-Patron of the Interfaith Foundation and Honorary Life President of Norwood and Ravenswood Children's Charity.

He was formerly Chairman of St Mary's Hospital Medical School in Paddington, London, Member of the Council of the Shakespeare Globe Trust and President of the Evelina Children's Hospital Appeal.

Sir Evelyn was educated at Harrow School and Trinity College, Cambridge. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1989 for services to banking and finance. He is married to Lynn Forester and has three children and two step-children.
